Chemistry and properties of N-heteroaromatic compounds: An approach towards organic small-molecule fluorophores

N-heteroaromatic rings are present in diverse compounds with relevant applications. They are biocompatible derivatives with attractive and synthetically adjustable electronic properties, allowing a good performance in environments of different natures. Some compounds bearing these structural motifs base their properties on their respective ring nature, and due to their high synthetic versatility, there are highly relevant applications in this regard. For example, diverse N-heterocyclic derivatives have been used as small-molecule organic fluorophores with unique photophysical properties for applications in non-linear optics, OLEDs, bioimaging, chemosensors, etc. Therefore, the discovery, chemistry, and molecular structure properties of N-heteroaromatic compounds combine an attractive research issue that has lately gained attention from researchers in the photophysical aspect since fluorescence processes are crucial for analyzing molecular properties in various environments.
