Overview
Nutrients nurture a healthy brain. Keeping the brain healthy is increasingly advocated by the popular press and social media, and represents a goal the community at large wants to achieve. From time immemorial, knowledge on the judicious use of extracts or preparations of certain plants, animals, and fungi has been passed on to generations after generations not only for treating diseases, but also for maintaining a healthy brain and mind. With progress, increasingly many disease specific active and effective molecules within natural products have been identified and have attracted growing attention.
There is increasing evidence to suggest that nutraceuticals may be effective in treating several chronic neurological diseases, and providing relief from associated discomforts. Potential utility has been reported in cognitive deficits, movement disorders, neurodegenerative diseases both sporadic and familial, psychological and psychiatric disorders, certain infectious diseases of the nervous system, and inflammatory and immunological disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems.
In this Special Issue on “Neuro-Nutraceuticals: Progress from Natural Products to Medicines for Neuropathologies”, our intent is to provide an up-to-date account of how neuro-nutraceuticals work at the molecular level, and what actions they possess to improve brain function. This volume will contain timely reviews, whilst manuscripts containing original findings are expected to arise from investigations on chemically identified molecules.
This special volume will provide a valuable and timely overview of this upcoming field and map key future directions for neuro-nutraceutical research. Our intent is to bring together contributions from established and emerging workers in the field to provide an up to date account of how and why nutraceuticals targeting the brain are such an attractive area for drug development. Editors are seeking original data manuscripts and timely reviews directly pertinent to the themes outlined below:
Nutraceuticals on bioenergetics of the brain
Nutraceuticals on redox status of ageing and diseased brain
Nutraceuticals on cognitive decline and memory loss in aging and in disease
Nutraceuticals: relevance for adult neurogenesis, neuronal differentiation and neuroregeneration
Use of nutraceuticals in neurodegenerative diseases: protein aggregation, toxic species and autophagy
Nutraceuticals: epigenetic mechanisms, sirtuins, histone modifiers and small non-coding RNAs in the brain
Nutraceuticals on neuroinflammation and immunological responses in the brain
Blood-brain barrier integrity and nutraceuticals
Use of nutraceuticals in infectious diseases of the nervous system
Nutraceuticals that are micronutrients with specific functions
Nutraceuticals - metabolism, bioavailability, the microbiome and gut-brain axis
Contraindications - why a particular biomolecule should not be employed
