Overview
Nowadays, various new manufacturing technologies have enabled the generation of 2D and 3D surfaces/structures at the micrometer and even nanometer scales. This represents a triumph for modern science, technology and industry. However, we still face new problems and new tasks to clarify the fundamentals of the micro/nanoscale manufacturing processes due to the difficulties in direct observation, measurement and control of the processes in the extremely small size scales. This has become a major drawback for further development of micro/nanoscale manufacturing technologies.
This special issue focuses on the multidisciplinary science involved in the state-of-the-art micro/nanoscale manufacturing technologies for creating surfaces/structures with high precision. The topics include, but are not limited to:
Mechanical, physical, and chemical responses of materials in micro/nanoscale manufacturing processes and the tool/workpiece interaction mechanisms.
Characterization of micro/nanoscale manufacturing processes using multidisciplinary science-based methods.
Dynamically, thermally, chemically, optically, or electrically assisted micro/nanoscale mechanical manufacturing processes and hybrid processes.
