Overview
The increasing demand for clean and safe water represents a major challenge for economic development and public health. The widespread use of synthetic organic compounds (SOCs) has raised environmental concerns due to their presence in aquatic environments, bioaccumulation along the food chain, and recalcitrance to conventional water treatment technologies. The increasing number of emerging and complex contaminants makes it more difficult for current centralized treatment facilities to treat the SOCs. Avoiding the use of SOCs is unlikely, because they are of essential medical and industrial importance. Therefore, there is an acute need to develop technologies that can effectively control the SOCs. While considerable effort has been exerted on improving SOCs removal efficiencies by different conventional water treatments, advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) have shown to be more efficient than the conventional ones. However, the development of AOTs is still challenged by several drawbacks such as toxic by-product formation, high energy cost, special requirement for reactor design, etc. This special issue is dedicated to state-of-the-art AOPs for environmental protection, particularly in water. Diverse topics related to AOTs will be covered including but not limited to:
1. Recent advances in AOTs for wastewater treatment and reuse
2. Treatment of emerging synthetic organic compounds (e.g., PFAS)
