The emergence of the 4th Industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) has significantly altered the safety landscape in modern industrial environments. The operation of ‘Smart factories’ is based on the implementation of decentralised decision-making activities within semi-autonomous cyber-physical systems. In addition, a vast amount of data communication takes place between inter-connected devices and human operators, aiming to optimize the implementation and control of manufacturing processes.
While Industry 4.0 is quickly transforming the modern industrial landscape, significant challenges related to its effective application are emerging. The most significant one is Safety 4.0, in other words, the transformation and enhancement of Safety management models, processes, tools and techniques that will allow the efficient implementation of safety management procedures within the new manufacturing environment. The motivation behind this Special Issue is to showcase the state-of-the-art in the area of ‘Smart Safety Systems for Industry’. We encourage original submissions which describe theoretical advancements and practical applications in the area of consideration.
