Overview
Leonid, a brilliant physicist, aged only sixty, suddenly passed away in March 2018, in the full run of the leaving a big empty space in the matrix isolation spectroscopy community. Born in St. Petersburg and he got his PhD in quantum electronics in 1986 in the department of Physics of Saint Petersburg state university. At the later stage of his carrier he moved to Helsinki where he joined the group of Professor Markku Räsänen. His work efficiency and engagement were exemplary as well as knowledge of the field. He authored more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, including the seminal work, Khriachtchev, L.
et al. "A stable argon compound." Nature, (2000), 406, 6798, 874, which became known far beyond our field. Leonid was also an editor of two books, a second edition of one of them, "Silicon nanophotonics", was released just in 2016. Lastly, Leonid was an excellent mentor, and role model for students, postdocs and junior colleagues.
To commemorate his impact to the field of cryospectroscopy of molecular conformations, complexes and novel molecular species as well as silicon photonics, we decided to dedicate a special issue of the Chemical Physics Letters to him. We are welcome the contributions directly related to the topics Leonid was working on, such as: matrix isolation, intermolecular interaction, conformational analysis, hydrogen bonding laboratory astrophysics, atmospheric chemistry, etc.
