Overview
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the main focuses of the current research and development in all fields. Ultra low power devices are extremely important in the modern world of internet of things. IoT applications include energy hungry transceivers that enable communications between wireless sensor nodes (WSN). Power requirements for WSNs vary from one application to another and range from few μW to several mW. Due to their large numbers and wide spread, battery replacement for these devices is practically impossible. Hence, energy scavenging from renewable energy sources is a viable alternative. Microscale energy harvesting becomes a crucial enabler to WSN technology. With recent advancements in low-power integrated circuits and emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications, ambient energy harvesting has become a promising approach to power widely deployed sensing, computing, and communication devices. This technology raises the possibility of self-sustainable or energy-neutral sensors. It also promises associated cost reduction by elimination of battery replacements and reduces energy-related maintenance downtimes. Photovoltaic (PV) energy harvesting using microscale solar cells is a promising approach to alleviate the power supply challenge in low-power autonomous systems.
The main focus of this special issue is on the research challenges relating to the making of compact size autonomous smart devices to successfully connect health Internet of things solutions. The topics to be covered are as follows:
