Overview
Introduction
Today the Earth is facing increasingly environmental and climatic challenges which threats the sustainability both locally and globally (Beckage et al., 2018; Sanchez et al., 2018). Islands, a geographical concept, play important roles in providing habitats for living beings and human worldwide (Fenchel et al., 2005). Island systems, because of their characteristics such as geographical isolation, limited population and resources, dependence of resources and information, and vulnerability of the environment, are facing even more challenges both ecologically and economically. To address these challenges, an island system needs to become both more sustainable concerning trade and other exchanges with surrounding area, as well as more self-reliant under ecological and economic perspectives (Bo et al., 2004; Lenzen et al., 2018; Andrés et al., 2018).
Recently, a forum about fostering world-class island was held in Chongming Island, one of biggest river delta islands, at Shanghai, which was part of a new initiative aiming to build a world-class ecologically sound island (Zhan et al., 2018). From the conference, quite a few questions from both research and practice have been proposed and discussed. The Virtual Special Issue (VSI) will focus on recent developments and visions on island sustainability. The guest editors of this VSI welcome theoretical, conceptual, empirical, and review papers, from a broad variety of disciplines (e.g., engineering, economics, management, entrepreneurship, environmental studies and social sciences, to mention a few) and stakeholders (e.g., scholars, industrial researchers, business and governmental officers). Papers should include comprehensive, up-to-date literature reviews, combined with novel theoretical and experimental investigations. Proposals for innovative environmental protection and environmentally sound production processes are also welcome. Potential topics of interest for this special issue include, but not limited to, the following aspects of:
1. What is the status quo of island sustainability and what experiences can we learn from worldwide in improving island sustainability?
• Comprehensive analysis of environmental status of typical island (air quality, water resources and pollution, soil pollution, and biodiversity)
• Sustainable land-use and ecosystem services assessment and management on island
• Sustainable economic system on island (agricultural, industry, and tourism)
• Sustainable waste management system on island and recycling options
• Population trends, carrying capacity and well-being on islands
• Islands and climate change
2. How to define and measure sustainable island?
• How to define sustainable island?
• Social, economic, environmental, and ecological indicators for island sustainability
• Assessment and measurement of island sustainability
3. What policies and approaches should be taken to improve island sustainability?
• Driving factors, diversity, complexity and stability of island resilience and resistance
• Environment, climate and ecosystem nexus of island system
• Strategy, planning, and policy for island sustainability
• Resources and goods trade between islands and surrounding areas
