Special issue: Simulation and Performance Evaluation of Communications in Distributed Systems

Distributed systems including newly emergent Web based systems are getting increasingly complex as well as widely required. Implementing them becomes a challenging issue since it needs sophisticated techniques, which integrate both distributed processes and information exchanges using various communication modes and fault-prone mediums. Moreover, they are often deployed over parallel and resource constrained platforms ranging from Internet to mobile, ad hoc networks, or even sensor networks.
These systems being extensively complex, their analysis and performance evaluation play a crucial role in the design process to ensure their correct deployment and efficient operation. It is then important to develop and use effective performance evaluation tools and methods in their design. As a result, performance modeling and evaluation continue to gain increasing importance. However, guaranteeing QoS and provisioning of correct systems are still a challenging problem. For instance, though new methods and tools are proposed to address such issues (e.g., Stochastic Automata Networks, PEPA...) quantitative analysis remains an intractable issue due to state space explosion.
Accordingly, this special issue focuses on newly efficient techniques of simulation and performance evaluation of distributed and mobile systems as well as Web services architectures using both analytical methods and simulation studies. Authors are encouraged to submit full papers presenting new research related to QoS and communication performance evaluation of these systems.
