The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is one of the most thrilling innovations of information technology. It is predicted that there will be about 20 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020. Internet of vehicles (IoV), is considered as a promising way to realize the next generation intelligent transportation systems, especially with more and more vehicles equipped with various capabilities of sensing, computing, and communications. Despite the rapid development, IoV is facing many security issues due to constrained resources and its decentralized wireless nature. Traditional security measures are almost centralized, which has limitations in scaling up to meet the security demands of IoV.
Blockchains have achieved great success beyond our expectation, as in Bitcoin and Ethreum. It is a decentralized platform in which each node stores a copy of the whole ledger. Blockchain isperceivedas a promising technique for scaling the IoV security. However, it is still unclear how the blockchain technique can be used for IoV security. There is still no general framework of leveraging the blockchain technique for enhancing the security of IoV. Leveraging the blockchain architecture in IoV is still a challenging research area.
