Overview
1. Background
One of the main issues of the coming decades is to improve resource efficiencies by integrating various life-supporting systems, using waste from one, as resource in other, and in exact moment when it is beneficial to all. The challenge is on the electricity, heating, cooling, transport, water, buildings, industry, forestry, agriculture and other systems to integrate and become more sustainable. Since the sustainable development depends more and more on the holistic approach on the integration of energy, water and environment systems, from the beginning of the 21st century, a series of Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) Conferences has been founded to cover these issues. The background of this Virtual Special Issue (VSI) of the Journal of Cleaner Production is therefore the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems dedicated to all three SDEWES 2018 Conferences - 1st Latin American Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environmental Systems held in Rio de Janeiro, 3rd Southeast European Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environmental Systems held in Novi Sad, and 13th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy Water and Environmental Systems held in Palermo. In this context, this VSI of the Journal of Cleaner Production is limited to the conference participants. Only selected high-quality archival papers from the SDEWES 2018 Conferences will be invited for submission.
The VSI focuses on scientists, researchers, policymakers, educators, general public and practitioners in various branches of industry including the energy and water & wastewater sectors and environmental services. The purpose of this VSI is to increase public awareness of key issues of sustainable development and to stimulate exchange of research results, practical experience and novel ideas among actors involved in investigating, planning and implementing sustainable development.
The guest editors have confidence that the selected papers and addressed issues will substantially contribute to the increase of the knowledge body published in the Journal of Cleaner Production and will be of interest to its readers. Information on the upcoming SDEWES events and other related activities can be found in the website of the International Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES Centre) at>.
2. Topics of interest
The organizers of SDEWES 2018 Conferences listed 66 research areas of interest to the conference. The majority of these areas can be divided into four main fields corresponding to those reflected in the conference name:
Energy(example areas: Energy policy, Primary and renewable energy resources, Energy system analysis, Advanced sustainable energy conversion systems, Energy efficiency in industry, mining, agriculture and aquaculture, Urbanism including Low energy buildings, etc.),
Water(Water policy and the energy-water interaction, Water resources, Water management, Wastewater treatment, etc.),
Environmental engineering and management(Environmental policy, Regional planning and cooperation, Waste management, Recycling of waste, Pollution modelling, etc.),
Sustainability science and promotion of sustainability concepts(Sustainability comparisons and measurements methodologies, Life cycle assessment, Environmental impact assessment, Green economy and better governance, Decarbonisation, Social acceptance, Political aspects of sustainable development, etc.).
