Overview
Ketamine was first developed as an anesthetic in the 1960s and has been used for this purpose since that time. In recent years notable subanesthetic effects have been identified, including rapid antidepressant effects. Additionally, ketamine has increasingly been used for non-therapeutic purposes at dance parties and raves and by individuals seeking a unique psychedelic experience. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore the antidepressant effects of ketamine and its abuse potential. Papers focused on human research, preclinical animal research or related work will be considered for publication.
Among the topics to be considered are:
Current status and controversies in the antidepressant effects of ketamine in human patients
Mechanisms of action for ketamine’s antidepressant effects, including NMDA receptors, non-NMDA receptor targets, ketamine metabolites, and downstream actions
Current status and controversies in the use of preclinical animal models to identify antidepressant effects of ketamine
Non-therapeutic use of ketamine by humans, including short-term effects and longer-term consequences
Animal models used to identify rewarding or addictive properties of ketamine, including self-administration, conditioned place preference, tolerance, sensitization and physical dependence
Long-term consequences of ketamine use in preclinical animal models
