Overview
Microalgae have an important role to play in the growing bio-based economy (the bioeconomy) as a biomass feedstock that can be grown on non-arable land with non-potable water. Developing technologies for growing algae in the bioeconomy for conversion to products (such as foods, food ingredients, feeds biofuels and/or bioproducts) can be accelerated with foundational knowledge of algae strains based on genetic understanding of native biochemical pathways and for targeted genetic engineering to develop improved strains. Publically available and robust genetic tools and complete genome sequences for potential production strains of algae have been limited, but recent research efforts are beginning to fill this gap. New sequencing technologies (including long read technologies and full length transcript sequencing) can now improve the quality of existing draft genomes and gene annotations and generate high quality genomics information for newly identified algal strains. This special issue will highlight these advances and invites original research papers and reviews that cover genetic tool development in algae (including microalgae, cyanobacteria, and macroalgae) and algal cultures. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Genome sequencing
Genome annotation
Genomic tools for examining algal pond ecology
Understanding functional links between the genome and the phenome
