Overview
Water security issues in developing countries, especially in underdeveloped areas of Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa, are of special significance considering the large population and unsafe water resource situation in many locations. Researches that put forward suggestions and solutions for water resources management and water security issues are thus essential to help the developing countries on clean water and healthy ecosystem, which is also in line with the Belt and Road Initiative in China. In Particular, this special issue will present the leading studies on ecohydrology and water safety, including major case studies in the developing countries. The critical concerns and significant future challenges as well as scientific and strategic responses will be identified.
This Virtual Special Issue should address the followings research questions: 1) Ecohydrological processes and new technologies, including advancement on the fundamental theory and new method of ecohydrology, ecohydrology related physical mechanisms in rivers and lakes, and new technologies and approaches applied to ecosystem restoration, prevention and reconstruction in both urban and rural areas; 2) Water security and ecosystem-related issues, including water related to eco-hydrological process, water allocation, operation and regulation based on applied ecohydrology, and 3) Panta Rhei – sustainable water security to safeguard ecosystem and society, including ecohydrology-based integrated water resources management (IWRM), application, and representative case studies in major developing regions including China/Asia and Africa, as well as scientific/technical responses for the identified water system Panta Rhei dynamics and water security issues.
