Overview
The World Health Organization (WHO) rate air pollution as one of the major challenges of the 21st century. This special issue focuses on innovative strategies/technologies of air pollution control towards sustainable cities and buildings, bringing benefits to environment, human-health and socio-economic aspects. Air pollution (e.g. from particulate matter, gaseous pollutants, bacteria, viruses) is linked with a variety of environmental issues (e.g. acid rain, haze, wildlife damage and global climate change) and significantly impact on human health, productivity, social economy and citizens’ quality of life. Effective air pollution control towards sustainable development involves urban planning, community design, building ventilation and air purification as well as social factors such as behavioural change, citizen engagement, policy support and financial collaboration. Therefore, the target of this special issue is to present the leading edge of advanced technical/social strategies of air pollution control towards sustainable cities and societies. Submitted manuscripts should address and propose:
- Sustainable Urban and mobility planning for air pollution reduction
- Trade-offs among urban air quality, economical cost and energy conservation
- Socio-economic impact assessment of different types of interventions to improve air quality, including citizens-oriented actions
- Living lab framework to drive innovations in the field of air pollution
- Low-cost sensors for urban environmental monitoring
- Citizen science and the role of low-cost sensors
- Application of GIS (Geographic Information System) techniques in air pollution control
- Advanced ventilation and air purification technologies towards air pollution control
- Air pollution control towards pollution-sensitive circumstances (e.g. clean-room, infant, hospital, classroom, underground space, industry environment etc.)
- Policies and Effective citizen engagement in air pollution control
