Overview
With the rapid development of wireless communication and networking technologies, novel information services and applications are expanding globally. Advanced communications and networks greatly enhance users’ experience and have brought a huge impact to all aspects of people’s lifestyles at home, at work, in social exchanges, and economically. Although these advanced techniques have extensively improved users’ quality of experience (QoE), they are not adequate to meet the various requirements of seamless wide-area coverage, high-capacity hot-spot, low-power massive-connections, low latency high-reliability, and other scenarios.
Therefore, it is a great challenge to develop smart wireless communication and networking technologies to support optimized management, dynamic configuration, and fast service composition. Derived from cognitive science and data analytics, cognitive computing can mimic or augment human intelligence, and exhibits great potential to power smart wireless communication networks.
Under the new service paradigm, artificial intelligence (AI) is significant for cognitive wireless communications to meet various technical challenges. The application potentials include complicated decision making, wireless network management, resource optimization and in-depth knowledge discovery in complex wireless networking environments. Furthermore, wireless communication and network ecosystems have to be upgraded with new capabilities, such as the provisioning of personalized and smart 5G network services assisted by data cognitive intelligence, advanced wireless signal processing based on deep learning, optimized wireless communication physical layer design based on reinforcement learning, adaptive wireless resource management based on cognitive power, etc.
This Special Issue (SI) will bring together academic and industrial researchers to discuss technical challenges and recent results related to cognitive wireless communications and networking. To meet the extreme requirements for user experience, efficiency and performance in a complex wireless networking environment, novel design, configuration and optimization for wireless communications and networking are in great need to satisfying the service requirements. The discussions will be included regarding how to improve QoS/QoE of wireless communication and networking services through AI and cognitive computing.
Submitted papers in this SI are expected to focus on state-of-the-art research in various aspects of smart wireless communications and networking, especially AI for cognitive wireless communications and networking. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Architecture and infrastructure for cognitive wireless communications
- Data analytics and behavior prediction for cognitive wireless communications
- Machine learning, strong AI and other innovative approaches for cognitive wireless communications and networking
- Context-aware, emotion-aware, and other novel wireless communications and networking services based on AI and cognitive computing
- AI and cognitive computing for the optimization of wireless communication systems
- Multi-modal information fusion, contextual data management and in-depth knowledge discovery for cognitive wireless communications
- AI-oriented intelligent wireless communications and networking design, including vehicular communications, cache-enabled networks and software defined networks, etc.
- AI-based testbed and performance evaluation for wireless communications and networking
- AI and cognitive computing for the 5th generation mobile network (5G) resource management in terms of communication and computation resources, spectrum usage and energy supply, etc.
