Overview
Landscape transformations are normally accompanied by collateral changes that in most of the cases are not planned. The boundaries between different land uses are transitional and complex territories that deserves particular attention. A transitional zone between two landscape units is usually a scenario where one is dominant over the other. This is what is called interface zones.
This special issue aims to focus on complex and transitional spaces and its future challenges in a context of growing urbanization and climate change.
These challenges can only be addressed with a hybrid perspective, taking into account the physical, ecological, social, political and institutional aspects. Starting from this point of view, we would like to go deep into the study of the urban-rural, urban-coastal, urban-river and urban-wildland interfaces through several case studies. These studies allows us to identify models and propose management and planning measures, both locally and globally.
We also welcome studies that see in these interface areas an opportunity to favour the landscapes with ecosystem services that can be positive for the different units under study.
