Overview
Currently, it is urgently needed to discover and develop novel drugs to treat a diversity of complex diseases all over the world. To the best of our knowledge, traditional medicine (TM) is a most promising healthcare-gift that people presents to the whole world, whose value for preventing and treating numerous diseases are being highlighted by scientific community worldwide as such efforts must accurately and rapidly promote the modernization and internationalization of traditional medicine by integrating global intelligence and power in biomedicine niches, which must enhance the general capability of traditional medicine yielding benefits to the people throughout the world. However, the complexities present in diagnostic theory, chemical composition of herbal medicine, and therapeutic philosophy, which are substantially impeding the progression of traditional medicine for novel-drug discovery involving unclear bioactive compounds, mechanisms of action, undetermined targets for therapy, non-specific features for drug metabolism and toxicology, etc.
To overcome those confusions, systems biology driven systems pharmacology and metabolomics are supposed to be great option for improving the future of traditional medicine in terms of its therapeutics mostly involves the complex interactions between small-molecules in vivo (the hosts) and small-molecules in vitro (the TM), it will be able to solve the scientific difficulties with TM from systems biology perspective, and promote drug discovery and development in a new horizon.
Basically, systems pharmacology and metabolomics are defined as an integrated systems biology driven interdisciplinary approach whose applicability requires the integrative involvements of the knowledge and techniques with many subjects from chemistry, biochemistry, instrumental science, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacology, drug metabolism, bioinformatics, etc. To enhance the capacity and global impact of systems pharmacology and metabolomics strategies to addressing the key questions towards TM and drug discovery in a real world of biomedicine, we would like host a special item with research topic entitled "Systems pharmacology and Metabolomics of Traditional Medicine " in Phytomedicine, by which we figure out to collect 15-18 high-quality reviews and research articles to highlight the value of systems pharmacology and metabolomics in addressing the complexity of TM in system biology level, and enhancing their biomedical value and applications in a real world of biomedicine, as well as inspire more and more scientists to investigate traditional medicine from systems biology perspective, by which we can accelerate the drug discovery and development based on traditional medicine.
