Overview
Second language (L2)/multilingual writers are increasingly encountering and designing multimodal texts in digital and non-digital forms that combine multiple semiotic resources, such as words, sounds, and images (e.g., designing posters, picture books, and digital stories). In response to such engagement with multimodal composing in daily life, a growing number of teachers have attempted to employ multimodal approaches to support L2/multilingual writers in EFL and ESL contexts. Yet, adopting multimodal composing in L2 writing classrooms poses new questions and challenges for scholars and practitioners. One of the fundamental issues to consider is “what we mean by ‘writing’ to encompass literacy and multimodality more broadly, in and out of school” (Casanave, 2016, p. 507). It is important to better understand the nature of multimodal composing in multilingual contexts, and in particular to critically examine the discursive, social, and cultural process of multimodal meaning making for the advancement of research and pedagogy on multimodal composing in the field of L2/multilingual writing.
Thus, this special issue will examine the complexities of digital and non-digital multimodal composing in L2/multilingual contexts. We are soliciting submissions that address, but are not limited to, the following issues: (1) affordances and constraints of multimodal composing for L2/multilingual writers and their teachers across EFL and ESL contexts; (2) L2/multilingual writers’ engagement with multimodal composing; (3) theoretical and methodological issues related to researching multimodal composing in multilingual contexts; and (4) pedagogical issues concerning multimodal composing pedagogy in classroom practices.
In addition to full-length articles (either empirical or conceptual), we are seeking brief empirical reports and issue statements. Full-length articles and brief reports/statements should be 7,500 to 10,000 words and 3,500-4,500 words in length respectively, including references, tables, figures, and appendices. For complete guidelines for manuscript preparation, please consult the “Guide for Authors” available on the JSLW website at http://www.journals.elsevier.com/journal-of-second-language-writing/. Full papers will be submitted through our new online system, EVISE.
Interested authors should submit a 300-word abstract along with a brief biography to the guest editors by September 30, 2018. The abstract should indicate whether a full-length article or a brief report/statement is being proposed. Please contact guest editors Youngjoo Yi (yi.57@osu.edu), Dong-shin Shin (shindi@ucmail.uc.edu), and Tony Cimasko (tony.cimasko@miamioh.edu) with any questions.
