Overview
Computer plans an April 2019 issue on cognitive computing systems and applications. Cognitive computing is an emerging interdisciplinary domain. Broadly speaking, there are two lines of research in the cognitive computing discipline. The first is cognitive science-driven and encompasses neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and linguistics research. The second is more recent and is focused on the computer science foundations of cognitive computing.
Recent advances in computing—such as IBM’s TrueNorth neuromorphic CMOS chip, Nvidia’s Tesla P100 GPUs, and numerous open-source APIs are enabling unprecedented and transformational applications. This special issue will focus exclusively on the computer science-driven cognitive computing.
This special issue will bring together a coherent body of knowledge, recent research, and industry best practices in cognitive computing. The articles will balance coverage of the underlying foundations with practical applications to cater to the interests of both researchers and industry practitioners. Furthermore, the issue will reflect the different complementary aspects of cognitive computing.
The guest editors seek articles covering all areas of cognitive computing systems and applications, including those addressing fundamental and practical issues in cognitive computing, as well as those that focus on system aspects and cognitive applications development. Investigations that address foundational aspects of cognitive computing, and large-scale operational cognitive systems are of interest. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Numeromorphic processors and architectures;
- Infrastructures, frameworks, libraries, and APIs for cognitive systems development
- Information extraction and knowledge representation in cognitive systems
- Learning in cognitive systems
- Big data-driven cognitive computing
- Cognitive modeling
- Speech recognition and language generation
- Automatic question generation
- Question-answering systems
- Natural language analysis and understanding
- Cognitive analytics
- Cognitive chatbots and robots
- Cognitive Internet of Things (IoT)
- Cognitive vehicles
- Multimodal interfaces
- Cognitive computing systems evaluation
